Most site incidents are preventable. The habits below apply whether a crew is installing a rectifier cabinet, mounting solar panels or casting a foundation.
1. Assess the site and task before work starts
Walk the site, identify the hazards and agree the controls before anyone starts. Typical hazards include work at height, live electrical equipment, excavation, vehicle movement and weather.
2. Use the right PPE and tools
Personal protective equipment should match the task: helmets, safety footwear, gloves and eye protection as a baseline, and fall-arrest equipment for work at height. Inspect tools and access equipment before each use, and take damaged items out of service.
3. Control energy
Treat power systems, battery banks and rectifier cabinets as live until they are isolated and verified safe. Follow safe procedures for electrical work rather than relying on habit or speed.
4. Supervise and communicate
Brief the crew before work begins, keep a competent supervisor on site, and stop work when conditions change. Clear communication is one of the cheapest safety controls available.
5. Report and learn
Near misses are early warnings. Recording them, fixing the cause and sharing the lesson with other crews turns a close call into a better process.
